There is no volume icon in the right corner of the top panel in gnome
shell. The volume icon should now appear in the notification area, but
starting it is not really gnome-shell's responsibility. Do you have that
icon there?

That's true, but please report a separate wishlist bug, with multiple
issues in the same bug report, all but one are bound to be ignored. =)
