I'm afraid the check is still not quite right. Once I've reset my
preferred web browser to Chromium:
$ sh -x /usr/lib/chromium-browser/xdg-settings check
default-web-browser chromium-browser.desktop

+ binary=/usr/lib/chromium-browser/chromium-browser

I think chromium-browser.xml should point to
the /usr/bin/chromium-browser launch script rather than the binary.
Presumably this also breaks the setting of LD_LIBRARY_PATH and the other
stuff that the launch script does.
