Removing the X resources is a way to get a bit more usable fonts.
But fixed font is still completely broken.

Actually, setting Fixed / SemiCondensed / 11 uses the standard fixed
fonts. Unfortunately it is not possible to save these settings.
Using "Save Options" generates a .emacs file with:

(custom-set-variables
;; custom-set-variables was added by Custom.
;; If you edit it by hand, you could mess it up, so be careful.
;; Your init file should contain only one such instance.
;; If there is more than one, they won't work right.
 )
(custom-set-faces
;; custom-set-faces was added by Custom.
;; If you edit it by hand, you could mess it up, so be careful.
;; Your init file should contain only one such instance.
;; If there is more than one, they won't work right.
'(default ((t (:inherit nil :stipple nil :background "white" :foreground
"black" :inverse-video nil :box nil :strike-through nil :overline nil
:underline nil :slant normal :weight normal :height 107 :width semi-condensed
:foundry "Misc" :family "Fixed")))))

But if I restart emacs23, I still get the ugly fonts.
