In Ubuntu, we've applied the attached patch to achieve the following:

We thought you might be interested in doing the same.

Downstream bug report:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/d-shlibs/+bug/504365

First of all: Thanks for the bugreport - it is highly appreciated, even if I disagree with its content!

I disagree that this is a "fix" - it looks to me as merely a _workaround_ and a fix is needed in glibc-2.10.

Please, when raising severity, elaborate on why. Do not expect others to find it as obvious as you from the material presented - please explicitly mention the reason(s) you've raised severity.

Your referenced bugreport mentions that a single person is affected by this bug, and contains no reference (that I could find) back to the underlying bug of the typo in glibc-2.10.

d-shlibs already (since some time) has a mechanism for individual packages to add workarounds, and long-term solution should IMO be to fix the underlying problem and do a binNMU - not to carry around such workaround in d-shlibs.

Based on the presented material, and my understanding of it, I have now lowered severity and tagged as wontfix. Please do provide more material and/or elaborate on the existing, if you still believe that the proper approach to handle this is the presented patch, rather than fixing glibc-2.10.

I suggest to reassign to the glibc package (and removing wontfix tag and maybe raise severity). I have not done so, as I do not know about that underlying problem so cannot defend it.

Kind regards,

- Jonas
