Just a data point.
I installed qt3-designer on an headless AlphaPC 164LX machine running a fresh installation of Lenny, using X11 forwarding with ssh to an x86_64 machine (also Lenny).
I was able to start 'designer' from the command line, and it did not crash. I don't know what I am doing in 'designer', but I was able to create and save an 'unnamed.pro' project with some random button groups, spin boxes, and text edit objects.
