*** Please type your report below this line *** I discover a DEFAULT_DISPLAY_MANAGER_FILE.dpkg-tmp file in my home directory. I use just "su" to become root, and afterwards apt-get upgrade. gdm, during upgrading, has wrongly moved that file into my home directory. I think the problem is in gdm.config: mv $DEFAULT_DISPLAY_MANAGER_FILE "DEFAULT_DISPLAY_MANAGER_FILE.dpkg-tmp" where there is a $ missing.
