Could you please run it under valgrind and send me the output?
It's like this:
1) apt-get install valgrind
(it's only on i386 machines, but yours should be)
2) valgrind --log-file=/tmp/vgtrace debtags update
3) send me /tmp/vgtrace.[the extension that valgrind adds]
4) dpkg --purge valgrind if you don't use it
