Not so sure but fontconfig is a replacement, but it does
not work as effectively as defoma yet.

I'll investigate how X related fonts packages handle this
issue and refine mathematica-fonts if possible.

BTW, this package was packaged for MathML and then MathML
was supported by STIX fonts so I thought to remove the package
from Debian.  But a user requested me to keep maintenance of 
the package because it would be useful to use Mathematica 
from remote terminal.  So I keep maintence of the package
but the package is in a state "better than nothing".
