I think this is simply the documentation which is wrong. The mixer values are not the definition of SOUND_DEVICE_NAMES, they are the Simple mixer control names, which can be found for instance by using amixer. Usually the "Global Volume" SMC is Master, which is also what conky uses by default if no device is specified.
