I've discussed the issue with some debian-x folks, and they agree too on
this: elvis should fallback to try "fixed" if courier is not available.

However, both the bug severity and the Recommends are unwarranted in
this case. The severity is definitely too high, given that elvis comes
with several UI, and it is fully usable with the others out of the
box. Also, in any default X installation the required font is available:
I had to try hard removing tons of packages before being able to
reproduce this.

As suggested by other Debian X people, I'm hence downgrading the
severity to normal. Patches are welcome to fallback to fixed if courier
is not available.
