There's been a suggestion just to kill the 'nc' process rather than try and waitpid, which may get rid of the need to use the -q option on suse/debian machines. A gentoo user was recently saying that on his nc version, disconnect detection wasn't that reliable anyways and would sometimes hang, so kill might be the way to go in general.
