But if bzip2 and gzip are working then I'm not sure what is up. I don't have an XFS filesystem anywhere so can't test using xfs dump. You said it has problems over NFS, have you tried doing a small xfsdump to a local file system just to see if pbzip2 can access it there or still has problems?
