It's primary intent was not to save effort. It is to create an extra layer
of security in the keysigning process where both posession of the secret
key and ability to read the listed email address are tested by the signer,
without the need by him to keep an administration.

That you have to enter the gpg password, is just how gpg works. But
luckily gpg has a solution for that: gpg-agent was designed to alleviate
this problem. And signing-party contains information on how to use it in
/usr/share/doc/signing-party/caff/README.gpg-agent
