I tested it this morning when responding to your initial email, so it isn't broken everywhere. I'll take a look in the next couple days and see if I can reproduce from a Squeeze environment. In the meantime, could you try moving your ~/.gimp and ~/.gtkam directories out of the way to see if it's some sort of configuration issue? Also, could you run gimp from a terminal and report back any error/warning messages that are printed to the terminal?
