Do you have policykit-1 and policykit-1-gnome installed (which versions)? What's the output of ps aux | grep polkit ? You should have a polkitd and polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 process running. When you try to log out, is another user logged in (via console or fusa or (gk)su/sudo)?
