Before the latest 'gvfs-backends' it was possible to get a list of the
Windows and Linux servers on the LAN that talked Samba/CIFS. The network
is a peer network (no PDC). It used to be possible to click on 'Places',
then 'Network' and 'Windows Network' and then the workgroup name. After this
a list of the hosts belonging to the workgroup would be presented in the
Nautilus
window.
Now, an authentication dialog pops up saying "Password required for
<Workgroup Name>", with the gnome login name as the user name. No matter
what combination of username and password I enter the dialog pops back up.
The result is I can't see a list of the machines that are online.
The old behavior can be emulated in text mode using 'smbtree' as follows:

The authentication code was added to 'gvfsbackendsmbbrowse.c' but it seems
to want a password for access to a specific server, not a workgroup:
