Can you please elaborate a bit where you gathered this information from?
I was not able to build Gnucash 2.2.9 with goffice 0.8, but I admit that
I (as in the recently added co-maintainer) haven't investigated yet the
details of what went wrong. So please share what you know -- it might
already be more than I know up to now.

I totally agree, Gnucash maintenance had some issues in the past. Yet
fixing all the currently open issues takes time. Though I will do my
best to improve the situation.
