Years ago I filed a similar wishlist against GTK 1 and I think I even submitted a patch. It was rejected, but they said they would consider it if I used a keyboard modifier instead of an alternative button, but I never got around to rewriting my patch. <https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=67649> also hints that using a modifier to reverse direction might be accepted.
