Regarding instructions, enscript works with or without
fontconfig. With fontconfig,
:~$ fc-match Courier-Bold
n022003l.pfb: "Nimbus Mono L" "Regular"
:~$ fc-match Courier

:~$ fc-match courier
n022003l.pfb: "Nimbus Mono L" "Regular"

This is on a system where sendfax failed.
On the system without fontconfig, enscript works too,
:/tmp# enscript -o a.ps /etc/network/interfaces
[ 1 pages * 1 copy ] left in a.ps
:/tmp# fc-match courier:bold
-bash: fc-match: command not found
:/tmp# fc-match courier
-bash: fc-match: command not found
This is on a system where sending faxes fails with segfaults.
