I think vim should give an appropriate warning instead of hanging. Looking back at the trace, is there something that needs to be initialized after failing to read /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/en_US.utf8/XI18N_OBJS? This is obviously now not a high priority bug, but please leave the bug open and forward it upstream or tag wontfix.
