I started it with
~% startx
having this in my home:
~% cat .xinitrc
xhost +localhost
xmodmap -e "keycode 77 = Home"
xmodmap -e "keycode 127 = End"
exec startxfce4
I just read the README.Debian files you mention. I realize that I did not
use an .xsession file before I used gdm.
