There's indeed some interesting magic going on: $ lwp-request -m HEAD -U libraries HEAD http://www.libraries.at User-Agent: lwp-request/5.827 libwww-perl/5.832 200 OK [..] $ lwp-request -m HEAD -U http://libraries HEAD http://libraries User-Agent: lwp-request/5.827 libwww-perl/5.832 500 Can't connect to libraries:80 (Bad hostname 'libraries') The second one is expected but the first one, where "libraries" is converted into "http://www.libraries.at" for me (and something similar for you), is - hm - a bit 'user-friendly'. I don't think it's a problem related to resolv.conf but the missing schema:// where libwww-perl adds stuff to make a complete URL. I'm just not sure where and why this is happening ...
