FYI, I ran into this bug while upgrading my etch installation to lenny.
The symptoms in my case was a HTTP redirection loop: "GET /blog/wp-login.php?upgrade HTTP/1.1" 302 "GET /blog/wp-admin/ HTTP/1.1" 302 [...] which took some time to debug. My solution was to disable the uid == 1 check for a moment.
