when unpacking a chroot, it would be nice to have tar honor a different /etc/passwd and /etc/group, namely the one belonging to the chroot. Otherwise, system directories that are owned by dynamically assigned uids/gids have the wrong owner. This possibly happens when the original system /etc/passwd is used and when --numeric-owner is used, if the uids/gids in the tar input are different. The best solution would probably be an option --passwd /path/to/other/tree/etc/passwd --group /path/to/other/tree/etc/group which are then used by tar to map the user/group name to the numeric uid/gid.
