You're all correct: Alpine has no Free Software Maildir support. There is
Eduardo Chappa's patch, but he has been very clear that he does not want
to attach a Free Software license to it.
No matter what we do in Alpine, you're going to be better off using
Dovecot as an intermediary.
But I am going to work with someone who will write a Maildir patch for
Alpine that is Free Software this weekend.
