Here's a similar but less contrieved situation:

I install lenny on a brand new server.  For some reason, I'm quite
unhappy with file $FOO having been withdrawn from logcheck, so I just
grab a copy from somewhere else (possibly an older server).  There's no
way to tell this manually-added file apart from another one which was
left around as cruft.
