Interesting, I only started using the [[ "test" equivalent when I had read about this being available on any posix shell. Unfortunately, I can't find the relevant webpage anymore. Oh well, I suppose that any modern system can spare those additional forks (which sum up to approx. 10ms on any run of that init script).
