I had similar problems as mentioned by other posters (see below for logs).

After building sl-modem-daemon from source (version 2.9.11~20080817-4) I could 
connect to my ISP w/o any problems.

Here the log of my slmodemd with ALSA modem, which reports an error.  With the 
SmartLink modem, I also got a segfault at the same place where the error occurs 
in the ALSA case.
