Working on debian sid amd64,
I just downloaded freetype-2.1.{7,8,9,10}.tar.bz2 from
  http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=3157
I gave each of them a "./configure && make", which ran
smoothly (even with gcc-4.0!). I then ran a copy of xpdf
pointed at the resulting .so file, e.g.,
  LD_LIBRARY_PATH=~/src/freetype-2.1.10/objs/.libs xpdf
SportyAdventur-eng-rgb.pdf

The garbled fonts showed up when using any version except 2.1.7.
There were a _lot_ of changes from versions 2.1.7 (2003-11-07)
to 2.1.8 (2004-04-21). I read the ChangeLog, but nothing jumped
out at me. Can a freetype developer jump in and help isolate the
problem?
