OK, so now I'm filling from some different machine, that runs Debian. Version: 1:7.1.314-3+lenny2 However I checked that this applies equally to the current sid version. Version: 2:7.2.148-2 > > Works fine here: http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=419 > > There is already a syntax file for highlighting syslog messages shipped > with Vim. It's the 'messages' filetype. As such, I'm closing the bug. Correct. However vim doesn't automatically detect that /var/log/syslog is of type 'messages'. The attached patch fixes this along with a plethora of other /var/log file which are by default of the same type. I don't know if this could go upstream, since I didn't check whether all those files, in case they exist, on other distributions have the same format. I would recon they do. I'm thus reopening the wishlist bug and asking you to please consider including detection of the affore mentioned file types.
