When hal starts and detects the raid device it segfaults : hald[17354]: segfault at 0 ip 0000000000433735 sp 00007fffa26f78d0 error 4 in hald[400000+55000] This bug looks like a know bug as it's already fixed in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hal/+bug/361689 I tried to backport the ubuntu patch without success .. (patch is Ok, but hald still segfaults..) Running Xorg without hal is doable, but lot of apps won't work. And even worst, without hal you don't have mouse or keybard in X.
