Because not everybody out there uses GCC, I guess. But I can start patching GCC, and then come later to ld if that's really needed. By the way, gcc trunk (and gcc-snapshot in Debian) have now that option to pass -Wl,--build-id to the linker by default if that's supported, see [1].
