This works for GNOME as far as I know in the 2.0.x releases in
unstable, but not in the older 1.2.x in stable. I don't know if
somebody implemented this for KDE or other systems.

Great to hear. I hope it was implemented in a way that also work in
KDE. Vlc seem to have this implemented in a way that work with both
kde and gnome, so I guess code could be lifted from there if there is
need.

The screensaver disabling is implemented in a way that allows for other screensaver disabling implementations, but I think the GNOME screensaver is the only one that's been written so far.

It's bug 3067 upstream: http://bugzilla.pculture.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3067

The code for screensaver handling is in platform/gtk-x11/plat/screensaver.py .
