I have a working connection too, but network-manager applet shows no connection. I find the cause, and resolved: the problem is that in /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf there is an incorrect value:
[ifupdown] managed=false I changed this to true and after reboot my applet works correctly.
