because as I pointed out, root didn't have ~/.paros, whereas your user
has it.

so somehow the version of openjdk-6 in squeeze doesn't like paros. The
one in sid seems to do fine. You have several options at this point:
- use the manual Sun's java6 invocation above
- copy /usr/bin/paros somewhere in your path, and edit it force the
use of Sun's java6
- wait for the latest openjdk-6 to enter squeeze [1].
