In KDE 3.5, Konqueror handled directories with thousands of image files gracefully. It was responsive and you could start browsing the directory immediately. Konqueror in KDE 4 now stalls a lot more, so I have to use Gwenview instead, which handles directories full of images more gracefully with less stalling. Another thing which stalls Konqueror is resizing the thumbnail size, on directories with thousands of images.
