This severely impedes the usability of the browser. This recently
started happenning to me as well; one thing that might possibly
connected is that I switched to fglrx; unfortunately, I currently have
no easy way to verify if switching back to radeon fixes the issue
again. Nevertheless, vanilla firefox-3.0.10 shows the text fine (using
the same profile).
Digging into this further, simply absolute-sized text is not shown, so
trivial testcase is:

xdpyinfo reports:
resolution: -2147483648x-2147483648 dots per inch
So fglrx reports broken dpi information about the display. This looks
like a fglrx bug, but upstream firefox still deals with it fine. I guess
Debian uses a patch that does something smart based on the dpi
information; in that case, it should guard against obviously bogus dpi.
