I've verified that wireshark works fine on a 64 bit kernel / 64 bit userland system. The system which is having problems has a 64 bit kernel but a 32 bit userland. It seems that this bug is actually in the libpcap0.8 library. There is an open bug (#517098) against libpcap0.8 related to running on a 64 kernel / 32 user system, but it's for a newer kernel (I'm using 2.6.26-2-15lenny2.)
