Unless you set stem, in which case they can be named whatever
you want.

I do not understand. I guess I should say this is passed along
to dpkg-buildpackage and third-party modules. What they do with it is
up to them.

Well, make-kpkg just passes the value to dpkg-buildpackage using
the -k option, and to third party modules usingt the KMAINT environment
variable. How they handle it is up to them.

Nope. If you want to use a root command, you need to specify
which one.

Most people do not seem to care much for the source links. And,
unlike the build links, kernel header packages do not contend to be
targets.
