AFAICT, you experienced a similar problem to what was reported (and fixed, at 
some time, with addition of a Debian patch) in #497971.

Btw, the problem is back in 2.6.29-1-686, but I hope it will be properly 
addressed somehow.

In the meantime, the option in the modprobe.d conf file is a safe precaution.
