Well, on my system /usr/local/etc/mplayer.conf doesn't exist - note
its /usr/local - and ttbomk, shouldnt be created by a Debian package.

As such, the message saying "Configuration files are read system-wide
from /usr/local/etc/mplayer.conf" is wrong.
