Niko,

Thank you for your reply.
Package: perl
Version: 5.10.0-19
Severity: normal
File: /usr/bin/perldoc

Running perldoc on anything (e.g. perldoc -f join) gives:
        No documentation found for "perlfunc".

Weird. It should be saying
You need to install the perl-doc package to use this program.
because you have purged the perl-doc package:

pn perl-doc <none> (no description available)

What's the output of ls -l /usr/bin/perldoc*
 grep perldoc /var/lib/dpkg/diversions

n...@packard:~$ ls -l /usr/bin/perldoc*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 125 2009-01-01 15:57 /usr/bin/perldoc
n...@packard:~$ grep perldoc /var/lib/dpkg/diversions
n...@packard:~$

?

Was this system upgraded from an earlier release (or testing/unstable)
or is it a new Lenny installation?
It's a completely new installation.
Are there any traces of problems with the perl-doc package in
 /var/log/dpkg.log*
 /var/log/apt/term.log*
 /var/log/aptitude*
?
It doesn't look like it:

packard:/var/log# fgrep perl-doc dpkg.log* aptitude* apt/term.log*
packard:/var/log#

-Nigel
