It seems that the problem is resolved by editing /etc/texmf/dvipdfm/dvipdfmx.cfg commenting the line "f pdftex.map" and uncommenting "f dvipdfm.map" I'm far from an expert in xetex, so I don't know if this is the appropriate solution or if it causes other problems.
