Hi, Unfortunately, I can't confirm this at all, my experience is quite the opposite. I've had my stylus configured with the pen in absolute mode and the eraser in relative mode since the very first package, and can confirm this still works for me in 0.8.1.6.
Probably the best thing to do is give a full description of your setup (tablet type, config option etc.) to the folks on the linuxwacom-discuss list. Someone who has the same device as you can help confirm or deny this better than I'd be able to. I see no record of people reporting this problem previously though ...
