This seems to be a separate issue. The current bug is really the same problem as #314858 and #314987 (already merged) and I can work around this by replacing the line
DEBOOTSTRAPOPTS[0]='--variant=buildd'
with
unset DEBOOTSTRAPOPTS
in my pbuilderrc file.
I will report the other problem as a separate bug report.
