This same bug prevented gnome-settings-daemon from starting on my system. When starting GNOME, I got a dialog telling me that the settings daemon failed to start and as a result some preferences, like themes did not work. When running 'gnome-settings-daemon --debug --no-daemon' from the command line I got the exact same error as David Prévot. Uninstalling gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg solved the issue (I didn't try downgrading).
