If this is really intended behaviour, then it hasn't been thought through. For a start, the "root terminal" in the main gnome menu is broken as a consequence. The command there is

gksu -D Terminal -- env -u ORBIT_SOCKETDIR /usr/bin/x-terminal-emulator

The whole thing seems very nannie windozie to me: I am banned from editing, say /etc/apt/sources.list, from any sort of gnome/xorg application, but I can use emacs provided I don't try to run it from a spawned xterm or the like.

What is the newbie who hasn't yet learnt emacs or vi* or the like meant to do?

Sorry to grumble: seems to be an upstream problem...
