Sound seemed to stop working on my system one day, with errors like
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:996:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Using strace, I found a failure to open /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p. And lsof
revealed
% sudo lsof /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p

xpdf.bin 1514 andrew 75u CHR 116,16 4909 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
Closing xpdf indeed fixed the problem. However, I can't replicate this.
I opened up the same PDF file again, and this time xpdf did not open a
sound device, nor did it open anywhere near 75 file descriptors. I have
no idea what I did to cause this.
I'll only follow up on this if it happens again.
