With the default configuration I got:
/etc/cron.daily/email-reminder:

run-parts: /etc/cron.daily/email-reminder exited with return code 2
debconf doesn't ask if user wants to use ssl connection, and doesn't set
smtp_ssl properly.
So at line 170 in /usr/bin/send-reminders:
if ($preferences{"smtp_ssl"}) {
^^^ This is always true, libnet-smtp-ssl-perl is in Recommends, and
send-reminders fails if isn't installed.
