I've also been hit by this problem, making my VNC connexions useless
as I uses Gnome on my Lenny system, with a specific keyboard layout
(french dvorak variant). I guess that the problem comes from Xvnc not
providing XKB support : Gnome widely uses it to configure the keyboard,
as XKB is the standard X keyboard management since Xorg. the problem is
that Xvnc server from tightvnc package is built from a very old XFree 3
base, and so don't provides such "modern" X extensions as XKB...
Anyway, I would be interested by a solution :-P
